Mesh Avatar Studio Guide

Mesh Avatar Studio — One illustration in, a living avatar out.

Mesh Avatar Studio turns a single character illustration into an animated 2D mesh avatar — it blinks, talks, turns its head, breathes and sways its hair. Drive it with your face and voice, and stream it in OBS.

What is Mesh Avatar Studio?

A free, open-source tool (MIT License) that converts one head-and-shoulders illustration into a live 2D avatar. A coding agent such as Claude Code or Codex prepares the rig from your image; you fine-tune it in a local editor with a live preview, then puppet it with webcam face tracking and microphone lip sync.

  • Blink, talk and turn its head — driven by mesh deformation, no animation frames needed
  • Breathe and sway its hair — continuous idle motion keeps the character alive
  • Follow your face and voice — processed locally; camera data never leaves your machine
  • Stream to OBS — transparent-background browser source, expression hotkeys, lighting presets

The official repository and demo: shinshin86/mesh-avatar-studio. This site is an unofficial fan-made tutorial hub — every guide is based on the project's own documentation.

FAQ

Is Mesh Avatar Studio free?
Yes — the code is MIT-licensed and free. The bundled sample character has her own usage guidelines.
What kind of illustration works best?
A front-facing, head-and-shoulders PNG with a transparent background. No illustration? Use --random to generate one.
Can I use it for VTuber streaming in OBS?
Yes — calibrate the Live page, copy the OBS URL and add it as a Browser Source (e.g. 1080 × 1080).
Does it work without installing anything?
Yes — the browser Player runs face tracking and lip sync entirely in Chrome or Edge. Nothing is uploaded.
How is it different from Live2D?
It is a free, open-source alternative focused on one workflow: one illustration in, a streaming-ready avatar out, with a coding agent doing the rigging. See the full comparison.
Is this the official site?
No — unofficial fan-made tutorials. The official project is on GitHub.
